Everything We’ve Learned from Hosting 100+ Birthday Parties & Why We Still Love It

If I had a nickel for everytime I've witnessed someone's first hayride....(it never gets old), I’d have… well, enough to build a second barn.

After hosting more than 100 farm birthday parties here at Hansel Hill Farm, I’ve learned a few things: kids love being able to play with and feed the  farm animals, sit on a tractor and take a hayride around the farm.  Adults love the relaxed atmosphere, coffee and a quiet space to relax.   We’ve had parties for one-year-olds learning to walk, tweens in matching cowgirl boots, and yes, even a few grownups who just wanted to relax by the fire, and roast marshmallows under the stars.  Let me tell you, there is nothing better than an adults only hayride at sunset.  It really can’t be beat.

Hosting birthdays has become one of my favorite parts of farm life. It’s where the chaos meets the magic.

Why A Farm Birthday Party Is The Best Kind Of Party

If you’ve been searching for a farm birthday party near me, let me tell you, you’ve found the right spot.

Here’s what makes it special:

  • The farm is the entertainment. While most kids dive right into mingling with the animals, we also provide a space where kids can run and play throughout the farm. You don’t need a magician when you’ve got goats with big personalities, rabbits to cuddle, and pigs that love attention. Kids get to feed, brush, and pet real farm animals, and somehow, they never get bored.

  • There’s space to run, play, and be wild. No indoor bounce house can compare to a hayride, a dirt path, and a field full of laughter. Parents constantly tell me how much they appreciate seeing their kids unplugged and outdoors.  It's the perfect combination of entertainment and relaxation.  It really is fun for the whole family.

  • It’s structured, but not too structured. We have a rhythm to our parties… animal visits, hayrides, optional crafts, but we also leave room for spontaneous joy. Every child (and parent) gets a little room to breathe.  Almost nothing is off limits.  We even have a dirt pile. Because, well, kids LOVE dirt piles.

5 Tips To Make Your Farm Birthday Party A Total Hit

I’ve seen what works, and what can go hilariously sideways. So here’s what I always tell families planning a party at Hansel Hill:

  1. Skip the fancy shoes.
Trust me on this one. Kids will end up in the grass, the mud, or possibly with a chicken on their lap. Go for washable sneakers or boots.  Closed toed shoes are a must for keeping little piggies safe from the bigger piggies.

  2. Bring a cooler of drinks and snacks, for the adults too.
While the kids are running wild, parents appreciate having something to sip, relax and unwind with. (We’ve seen some pretty epic adult snack boards show up under the pavilion.)

  3. Let the birthday kid lead the way.
Some kids want to hold every rabbit. Others just want the hayride and cupcakes. We build in flexibility so your child can steer the day.  It’s their special day and we intend to make sure they leave here knowing just how special they are.

  4. Take advantage of our extras.
From face painting and egg collecting to marshmallow roasts and honey jar crafts, our add-ons make great party favors and keep kids happily engaged.

  5. Embrace the imperfection.
Someone will probably cry. A goat might poop in an inconvenient place. But you’ll also get real joy, real smiles, and memories that don’t feel filtered or posed.

My Favorite Moments

One of the things I love most is watching how kids open up when they’re on the farm. We had one birthday girl who whispered to every animal like she was letting them in on a secret. Another child lined up his guests and gave them a full farm tour… like a five-year-old docent with a clipboard and serious purpose.

Sometimes, the grownups have the most unexpected moments too. I’ve seen parents crouch down to help their toddlers brush a bunny, only to stay there a little longer, clearly enjoying the moment just as much. Or grandparents who come “just to help” and end up snapping as many photos as anyone.

That’s what makes farm birthday parties so memorable. The animals are safely where they should be. The food stays at the table. But the joy? That’s free to roam.

About the Authors

Brian and Vickie are first-generation farmers who turned a patch of land and a pandemic-era passion into Hansel Hill Farm… a micro-farm rooted in sustainability, connection, and community. Drawing on the resilience they built during their military service and the hands-on lessons of building a farm from scratch, they now share not just food but a way of life, where every seed, animal, and event helps grow something meaningful.
